Abstract

555,490. Artificial silk &c. treating textiles with liquids. BARTLETT, R. G., DUNBAR, C., MARCH, P. J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 20, 1942, No. 2273. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] A woven fabric composed of yarns comprising a synthetic linear polyamide is rendered stiff, springy, and resilient by immersing it in a liquid which has a solvent action on the polyamide, allowing the fabric to remain in contact with the liquid for a short time, removing the fabric from the liquid, partially or completely drying whilst the fabric is not in a relaxed condition, as by ironing or stentering, and then, if necessary or desired, rinsing the fabric to remove any of the solvent medium which remains thereon. The treatment is carried out so that the individual fibres of the yarns are more or less cemented together and the warp and weft yarns of the fabric are more or less cemented together at their points of mutual contact in the weave. A fabric of open weave may be treated. As solvent liquid, formic acid and methanol, phenol and water, or anhydrous calcium chloride and methanol, may be used. The time of immersion may be 10-120 seconds and the temperature may be 25-60‹C. The impregnated fabric may be squeezed through rubber rolls and ironed at 125-130‹C. while still moist with the liquid. The fabric is then washed to remove residual solvent and again ironed. The synthetic linear polyamide may be derived from 6-amino-caproic acid or 11-aminoundecanoic acid or it may be a polytetramethylene sebacamide, or polyhexamethylene adipamide, or it may be an interpolymer formed by including with the polyamide-reactants other linear polymer-forming reactants, e.g. glycols or monoaminomonohydric alcohols. The yarns may contain cold-drawn filaments. Specifications 461,236, 461,237, 474,999 and 495,790 are referred to.
