Abstract

555,171. Impregnating fibrous material. CAMPBELL, W. B., MAASS, O., and MASSEY, E. E. July 4, 1941, No. 8497. [Class 15 (i)] [Also in Group VIII] Rolls of cigarette paper &c. 50 supported with intermediate heat conducting spacers 53 on a hollow mandrel 51 adapted to be slipped over a heating column 28 in the centre of the treating chamber 5 are impregnated with a solution of wax in a volatile solvent by repeatedly soaking the rolls in the solution at a temperature above the boiling point of the solvent and removal of the solvent by the application of heat and suction in an apparatus comprising in addition to the treating chamber 5 which is surrounded with a jacket 24 and heating coils 25, 26 a storage chamber 6 heatable by a jacket 46 and coil 47 and connected to the chamber 5 by a pipe 8 and valve 9 and open at all times to the air by a valve 7, the treating chamber being connected by a pipe 12 to a condensing coil 13 communicating with a vacuum pump by a pipe 15 having a branch 12a leading direct to the chamber 5 and other branches 18, 19 leading to a solvent tank 20, control valves being provided in the pipes and branches as shown. By suitable manipulation of the valves and heating (and cooling arrangements) the impregnation may be carried out in the following stages : (1) charging the storage chamber 6 with treating solution ; (2) placing the paper rolls and heatconducting spacers 53 on the heating column 28 ; (2a) heating the treating chamber 5 and contents above the boiling point of the solvent (3) placing the treating chamber under suction ; (3a) cooling walls of treating chamber to cause any condensation of solvent at next stage on said walls rather than on the paper rolls; (4) placing evacuated treating chamber 5 in communication with storage chamber 6 causing treating solution to enter chamber 5 ; (5) disrupting this communication when the transfer of treating solution is complete ; (6) heating solution in treating chamber above boiling point of solvent while rolls are soaking therein ; (7) restoring communication between treating and storage chambers whereby unabsorbed solution is forced back to storage chamber by vapour pressure ; (8) disrupting this communication when the transfer of treating solution back to the storage chamber is completed ; (9) removing all remaining solvent in treating chamber and contents by heat and suction ; thereafter stages (4) to (9) are repeated.
