Abstract
555,083. Resins. HERCULES POWDER CO. May 19, 1941, No. 6439. Convention date, June 4, 1940. [Class 95] [Also in Groups VI and V] A chewing gum base is prepared by intimately mixing rubber or rubber-like material with hydrogenated rosin or hydrogenated abietic pimaric or other rosin acid, preferably at least 50' per cent. saturated. The hydrogenated rosin may be prepared by treating rosin in molten form or in solution in a volatile organic solvent with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. reduced nickel, at elevated temperature and pressure. Natural rubber, e.g. crepe or guayule, or rubber latex, synthetic rubber e.g. poly-, polychloro- or polymethyl-butadiene or latices made therefrom, gum chicle, factice or, preferably, chicle substitutes such as gutta percha, jelutong balata, gum tuno, namaqualand rubber, almeidana or euphorbia gum, abba rubber and inferior guttas, e.g. gutta siak, or mixtures thereof may be used. The ratio of rubber &c. to hydrogenated rosin is within the range of from about 20 to 1 to about 1 to 10, preferably from about 2 to 1 to about 1 to 2.5. The mixture may also comprise other resins, synthetic or natural, such as rosin, coumarone or Pontianak resin, ester, sweet-bay, spruce, Copal, Kauri or Damar gum or balsams, an oily softening agent, such as petrolatum, water white mineral or other petroleum oil, beef stearin, or cottonseed, olive or other vegetable oil or hydrogenated oil and a wax or wax-like material such as paraffin, candelilla, ceresin or bees-wax or stearic acid. The ingredients may be mixed by heating them together to a molten state with stirring but are preferably worked on a roll mill at temperatures below the melting point of the rubber &c. or the hydrogenated rosin. The wax and softening agent may be heated together and the rubber &c. and hydrogenated rosin stirred into the mixture. When a large proportion of wax is used, it may be heated with the rubber &c. and the hydrogenated rosin added. Rubber latex may be mixed with the other components before heating to evaporate the water. A small amount of water may be incorporated in the base particularly where the rubber is in solid form. In addition to sweetening and flavouring agents, fillers, such as clay, calcium or magnesium carbonate, magnesium oxide calcium or barium sulphate, or carbon black, or medicines such, as phenolphthalein or mannitol, may be included. Cocoa powder may be used as a filler and flavouring agent or cocoa syrup as a sweetening and flavouring agent if gum chickle is not present.
