554,997. Galvanic batteries. MULLARD, S. R., and HAYES, C. F. M. Jan. 16, 1942, No. 7259/43. Divided out of 554,926. [Class 53] Dry batteries having elements of flat form are made by inserting a number of electrode plates into a corrugated container element which engages a sufficient length of their perimeter to support them in spaced substantially parallel relation, securing the edges of the plates to the container element, inserting dipolarizing and electrolyte units into the pockets between the plates, sealing a cover member over the open side of the container, and compressing the assembly to press adjacent surfaces of the battery elements into contact. The Figure shows an assembled battery, before compression, in which a corrugated container element 41, which may be of proofed paper, forms three sides of a box-like container. The electrodes, consisting for example of zinc plates 17, with a carbon coating 18, are inserted edgewise through the open side into every fourth corrugation and their edges are secured therein by sealing material. A porous sheet 50 of paper or other material is inserted into the central corrugation between each pair of electrodes, and in the compartments formed on either side of it are placed respectively depolarizing and electrolyte units 43, 44. The member forming the fourth side of the casing is applied before or after compression of the assemblage. The porous sheets 50 may be omitted, the electrode plates being inserted in alternate corrugations of the container. The container may be formed of two elements, each comprising a pair of opposed or adjacent walls, or of four elements each comprising a single wall. Adjacent edges of the container elements are secured by adhesive or an overlapping sealing-strip.
