554,542. Variable condensers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and HASSELT, M. VAN. Jan. 6, 1942, No. 189. [Class 37] Particularly for use in neutralizing cross-talk in telephone cables, two similar separate condensers are so mounted that a detachable adjusting member may engage their shafts to turn them together through equal angles. In the example, two rotary ceramic dielectric condensers are mounted back to back on a plate 6 each having a fixed plate comprising a metal coating 8 and a movable coating 13 on a rotatable disc 4 operated by a shaft with a hexagon head 12. Assuming that both condensers are initially adjusted to the position shown of ¢-overlap, by engaging both hexagons by means of a U-shaped spanner, each limb having a hexagon hole or a 'slot at the end, the spanner can be used to move both movable plates and, in this arrangement the effect will be that of a differential condenser. Condensers of square-law of other configuration and other coupling means are described.
