Abstract

554,220. Fluid-actuated valves ; actuating mechanism. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 26, 1942, No. 15020. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1941. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXVII The blast-valve of a gas-blast switch is provided with means controlled by the contactactuating mechanism for opening the valve during opening, but not during closing of the switch and with further means for opening the valve, if the switch, during closure, is reopened when the normal valve-opening means is inoperative. The valve 45 controlling the blast from reservoir 1 to the arc space between fixed and movable contacts 13, 17, respectively, is operated by a lever 49 pivoted at 51 and provided witth spaced arms 53 adapted to be operated by a crank 29 on a shaft 31 forming part of the contact-actuating means. The arms are interconnected by a pin 59 on which is pivoted a spring link 61, 65 normally holding the valve closed. A pin 67 screwed into each arm 53 serves as pivot for the limbs of a U-shaped yoke member 83, the bight of which has a hole 85 in which the stem 89 of a U- shaped yoke 67 is adjustably fixed, by means of interengaging nuts 91, 93. The yoke 87 carries a roller 107 which is normally urged against an adjustable stop 109 on the end of an arm 53 by means of a spring link 97, 99, which is pivoted on a pin 95 between the limbs of member 83 and engages an eyelet 103 pivoted to a bracket 101 on an arm 53. During a normal opening movement, the leading cam surface 100 of crank 29 engages roller 107 and lifts arms 53 to open the valve 45 ; the roller finishing at the lower cam surface 113. During the subsequent closing movement, surface 113 rotates member 83 and yoke 87 counterclockwise about pins 67 into an inoperative postion. If the switch closes on to an overload, however, and the crank movement is reversed, further means are provided to open the blast valve. A further pair of plates 71 are pivoted on pins 67 intermediate the arms 53 and member 83 and are urged clockwise by a spring link 75, 77 pivoted on pin 59 and taking in an aperture in a pin 73 interconnecting plates 71. During closure, a pin 111 on crank 29 engages and deflects the plates 71, but clears them at surface 115. On reversal of crank 29, pin 111 engages surface 115 to rotate the plates 71 clockwise and by means of surface 79 thereon engaging pin 59, rotate the arms 53 clockwise to provide an immediate blast. The plates 71 are apertured at 81 to allow movement of pin 105. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the pin 111 in the closing movement engages ratchetwise a series of notches in plate 71 so as to provide more than one valve opening position if the switch reopens. By means of stop 109 and nuts 91, 93 adjustment of any one pole in relation to the others can be effected for simultaneous application or otherwise of the blast of a multipole switch.
