Abstract

549,381. Electromagnetic switches; latching switches. WHIPP & BOURNE, Ltd., and WHIPP, I.T.L. July 19, 1941, No. 9152. [Class 38 (v)] In a circuit-breaker in which a closing and retaining electromagnet 1, under control of a manual switch, is de-energized on fault conditions, repeated closure of the switch on to a faulty circuit, due to the manual switch being retained in the closed position, is prevented by a catch which is moved by impact of the opening breaker movement into position to lock the breaker arm against further closure. Contacts 4 are pivoted at 3b to the frame and at 4b to the crank arms 3 which are pivoted at 3a to the cores 2 and connected by pin 8 to form a toggle. When the breaker is tripped open, the pin 8 engages the radial edge 9 of a cam 10 and rotates it about pivot 11 so that the cam part 13 engages over the pin and locks it when the magnet is again energized. When the manual switch is released and the pressure of pin 8 on part 13 ceases, the cam 10 is restored by spring 12, preferably under control of a time-lag device. The Specification refers also to a rectilinearlymoving catch.
