Abstract
553,746. Welding glass ; electric discharge apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Dec. 1, 1941, No. 15438. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1940. [Class 56] [Also in Group XL] Relates to a method of sealing a glass disc across the open end of a glass envelope, particularly for sealing the bulb of a thermionic valve to a glass disc into which conductors are sealed. According to the invention, contiguous edges of the bulb and the disc are heated to a temperature at which they fuse together, the central part of the disc being cooled during the heating operation. In carrying out the method, the disc 3 is placed on a vertical chuck 5 which has wells n to receive the ends 4 of the conductors. A glass bulb 1 is placed over the electrode assembly, a separate overhead collet being provided if required to hold the bulb in correct position. The chuck is rotated and is heated by gas flames 8 in order to heat the disc 3 by radiation, but the disc may be heated before being placed on the chuck. Gas flames 7 are also directed against the rim of the bulb to fuse it to the edge of the disc, and at the same time the central area of the disc is cooled preferably by blowing air through a bore 9 in the chuck spindle. Alternatively, the disc may be cooled by contact with the centre of the chuck, or by blowing air through the lower ends of the wells n.
