Abstract
542,399. Making electric lamps &c. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 23, 1940, No. 14469. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1939. Addition to 521,918, [Group XXIII]. [Class 39 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] Relates to apparatus for sealing stems to the bulbs of electric lamps and similar devices by'the method, described in the parent Speci. fication, in which the assembled glass parts are fused together by heat conducted from a disc which 'is heated by indirect electric currents. The present invention consists of a machine for carrying out the method automatically. The machine comprises a number of heads 10, Fig. 2, mounted on a turret 11 which is rotated step-by-step about a hollow vertical column 65. Each head comprises a cage 12 for supporting a lamp stem 17, Fig. 3 and jaws 14, 15 for gripping a tubular glass envelope 13. The cage 12 comprises a holder 21 having a central aperture through which the exhaust tube 18 and the leading-in wires 19. 20 are threaded, and an annular heating-element 23 in which the flange 22 of the stem tube rests. The holder 21 is made of a non-metallic and non-conducting material, such as asbestos or sillimanite, while the element 23 is made of an electrically-conducting material, such as carbon, which does not stick to glass. When the glass parts have been placed in a head they are carried by the movement of the turret to a station where hollow, watercooled coils 52, connected to a source of highfrequency current, are moved up about the cage 12 so as to induce current in the heating-element 23 sufficient to cause the rims of flange 22 and the bulb 13 to be fused and seal together. The jaws 14, 15 are movable vertically by a spring and a lever 47 which can be rocked at the heating-station, by a cross arm 53 mounted on a vertical reciprocating rod 54 to allow the envelope 13 to be pressed into contact with the flange 22 to ensure a seal. After being sealed at one end, the envelopes are removed and they may be inverted and restored to the machine for sealing at the other end, the number of heads used being arranged to make two complete operations for each rotation of the turret.
