Abstract

553,602. Fluid-flow meters and indicators. STOKOE, C. L. Oct. 26, 1941, Nos. 10851/41, and 2517/42. [Class 69 (i)] In a fluid-flow meter or indicator in which a pivoted flap is located in the path of movement of the fluid and rotates a spindle from which indicating, recording, alarm or control mechanism is operated, the movement of the flap is communicated to the spindle by a crank and connecting rod or link motion and means are provided adapted to be engaged with the flap pivot for testing the freedom of the flap, said flap pivot, however, not projecting through the wall of the meter &c. In Figs. 1 and 2, the flap b is pivoted on a spindle c carried by a bracket d bolted to a bush e between which and the meter body a, open passages g are formed ; an outlet plate h, of about the same width as the flap, is provided on the bush e, a gap being left between the flap and plate h in all positions. The plate h may be omitted. Freedom of movement of the flap may be tested by a handle o<SP>1</SP> on a rod p<SP>1</SP> which may be engaged with a slot in the end of the spindle c ; a spring-pressed resilient washer prevents escape of fluid past the rod p<SP>1</SP>. The Sap is provided with a crank pin q, which may be offset as shown or in the centre line of the flap and is connected by a link n to a crank disc r carried by a fixed spindle s and provided with a crank u engaging a slot in a disc v on a spindle t ; a compression spring w surrounds the spindle t and presses a collar x. provided with an antifriction ring y, against resilient washer or washers to prevent leakage past the spindle bearing. The spindle 't carries a preferably split boss b<SP>1</SP> to which is attached a pointer c<SP>1</SP> moving over a dial d<SP>1</SP> ; boss b<SP>1</SP> also carries a lever f<SP>1</SP> for testing the action of the spindle t. End thrust on the spindle t is taken by a ball bearing g<SP>1</SP> carried by a bridge h on the meter cover a<SP>1</SP>. Secured to the pointer c<SP>1</SP> is a bracket i<SP>1</SP> carrying a graduated dial j<SP>1</SP> ; a frictionally held pointer k<SP>1</SP> is adjusted over dial j<SP>1</SP> to the flow at which operation of a control or alarm is to be effected through a tappet l<SP>1</SP> which may act through a lever-operated valve to open a compressed air supply and operate a whistle or a servomotor &c., or tilt an insulated lever to sound an electric bell or horn, or stop or start a motor &c. In a low-pressure meter &c., Fig. 5, the crank disc r is integral with the spindle t which is pressed axially by a spring t<SP>1</SP> and ball so that collar y<SP>1</SP> thereon compresses resilient washers to prevent leakage; a removable cover u<SP>1</SP> gives access to the parts. In another form, the spindle t drives an endless belt carrying a pen which records on a chart carried by a rotating drum. The bush e may be removed to the other end of the meter body to measure reverse flows, the plate k and parts carried thereby being similarly reversed, or the chamber l being rotatably adjustable and a swivel joint m being provided in the link n. Further, the meter may be arranged for upward or downward flow ; for downward flow, the flap b is counterweighted or spring-loaded. Specifications 447,809 and 447,895 are referred to.
