Abstract

553,542. Riveting. STANIER, W. A., GREAVES, H., and SMITHYMAN, G. T. Nov. 21, 1941, No. 14972. [Class 83 (iv)] A riveting hammer is fitted with an attachment to convert it into a self-contained abutment machine. The yoke shaped abutment e has the shorter leg e<SP>1</SP> fitted with parallel rods f connected at their outer ends by a block n. The rods are guided in brackets g, g', clamped at g<SP>3</SP>, g<SP>2</SP> to the barrel of the hammer. The bracket g<SP>1</SP> is in two parts the plane of division passing through the axes of the rods. The bracket g is split only at its barrel embracing part. A crosshead h rigidly connected to the rods confines springs j between itself and the bracket g to control the pressure with which the abutment is held against the work. The block h may limit the extent of the advance. A hand lever k pivoted to the bracket g is linked at m to the block h to provide for compressing the springs, to an extent limited by contact of the block n with the bracket g<SP>1</SP>, while the machine is being applied to the work. The holding pressure is varied by changing the springs j. In a modification the rods are of two diameters to provide shoulders to contact the bracket g<SP>1</SP> and the block h is adjustably mounted by screw threads and nuts and screws to control the amount of the spring pressure. In a further modification only one rod is employed mounted centrally between two guide plates sliding in dovetail guides on the brackets.
