Abstract

553,332. Hydraulic presses. SHAW & SONS (SALFORD), Ltd., and SHAW, J. B. Aug. 13, 1942, No. 11358. [Class 69 (ii)] A hydraulic press of the kind in which oil or other liquid passes from a storage tank 1 to the press cylinders and returns repeatedly to the tank is constructed so as to prevent undue heating of the liquid as a closed tank, and cooling air is drawn from a pipe 19 leading to the atmosphere through a filter 17 filled with oiled steel wool and passed through a bent pipe 9 immersed in the liquid. The outlet 10 of the pipe 9 is fitted with an inverted bell 11 with perforated sides, and is arranged above the high level 7 of the tank liquid. The main part of the pipe 9 is below the low level 8 and the pipe may be made of copper and of a section to ensure high cooling and the part in the liquid may be of spiral or branched form. The tank is of U-section and has a pipe 9 in each sector, and one or more filter boxes may be used. A cover 15 with joint ring 16 is used, and a sealed joint is provided where the pipe leaves the tank at 14. The invention is especially applicable to presses as in Specifications 525,913, [Group XXII], 544,331 and 545,620, [Group XXII], and is described in a form according to the last of these in which a double-length draw-plate 5 is mounted on rollers on a track 4 below which the tank 1 is arranged.
