Abstract

552,686. Cleaning coke ovens. BRASSERT & CO., Ltd., H. A., and BRUTON, A. L. Oct. 28, 1941, No. 13873. [Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Group XII] Deposits are removed from the interior surfaces of coke ovens, for example ovens of the kind described in Specification 440,181, [Group III], by suction means mounted on and moving with the ram for discharging coke. As shown in Fig. 1, suction apparatus is mounted on the beam 13 of the coke discharge ram and comprises one or more nozzles 16 arranged behind the ram head 12 and connected by a pipe 15 to a separator 17 provided with a fan 18 discharging cleaned fluid to the atmosphere. In a modification the separator and fan are mounted independently of the ram and connected by flexible connections to the pipe 15 and a pipe returning clean gas to the back of the ram head. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, four nozzles 16 are arranged behind the ram head 12 and communicate with primary cleaning separators 23, 24 and suction pipe 15 leading to secondary cleaning apparatus 25, the cleaned fluid being delivered to atmosphere. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the cleaned fluid is returned from the apparatus 25 to a return pipe 20 provided with a hit and miss regulator for induced air which is returned to a position behind the ram and serves to burn and loosen the deposits. The suction power may be derived from electric, hydraulic or other convenient source and may be switched on and off automatically in accordance with the position of the ram head. The suction power may be increased automatically as the ram approaches the centre of the oven where the deposits are thickest. The proportion of recirculated cleaned gas to air may be controlled in accordance with the height of the ram above the floor level.
