Abstract
552,616. Removing burrs from skins. TURNER TANNING MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and SCHETTLER, G. A. Oct. 14, 1941, No. 13179. [Class 138 (i)] In burring the wool or fur of animal skins, the latter are simultaneously spread and combed by one and the same rotary tool furnished with a combination of spreader and burring knives, under a supply of cleansing liquid, surplus liquid being expressed during the combing operation. A burring tool for use in carrying out this method comprises a rotatable drum 1, Fig. 2 (shown developed in Fig. 3), having attached thereto a plurality of spiral spreader knives 22, and a series of short serrated burring knives 23 disposed stepwise in offset relation in the spaces between the spreader knives. The skin S to be operated upon is pressed against this tool by a feed roll 2 co-operating with a resiliently-mounted roll 3, and is guided by a curved plate 18 carried by a short arm 8a of a lever 8, between a pair of which the roll 2 is mounted. Each lever 8 is carried by a link 9 pivoted at 10 to the machine frame, and is connected to one member 11 of a toggle T, the other member 12 of which is slidable in a bracket 13 and is acted upon by a spring 14. Each toggle is connected by a link 15 pivoted to a short lever 16 rigid with a shaft 17, which is treadle-operated through the medium of a half-cycle clutch. Fig. 2 shows the operative position of the parts, but when the toggles are broken, the roll 2 and its associated parts move away from the roll 3 and the operating tool. As the toggles are straightened, a lever 29 is actuated to open a supply of cleansing liquid through a pipe 26 to a sprinkler head 27, surplus liquid being expressed from the skin by the rolls 2, 3. The supply of liquid is automatically cut off when the toggles are broken. To enable the roll 2 to be pressed by the operator against the tool 1, the long arm 8b of one of the levers 8 is connected by a link 19 with a rotary eccentric 20 operaple by means of a hand lever 21. Specifications 18026/02, [Class 138 (i)], and 292,869, [Class 138 (i)], are referred to.
