Abstract

552,544. Testing glass bottles. BRITISH HARTFORD-FAIRMONT SYNDICATE, Ltd. (Preston, F. W.). Feb. 13. 1942, No. 1962. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises means for moving a bottle longitudinally, means for simultaneously rotating the bottle about its axis, and means for imparting impacts thereto during the movement at a predetermined point along the path of travel. The casing 11 has a hood 20 of wire mesh or transparent material provided with end openings 24, 25. Journalled in the casing are the shafts 14 of rubber-coated rollers 12 on which the bottle is placed. The rollers are rotated by a chain 15 passing over sprockets on the roller shafts the chain being driven from a motor 18 through a reduction gear. The bottle is pushed along the length of the rollers by a finger 27 attached to a block 28 sliding on a guide rod 29 against the influence of a spring 35. An extension 30 of the block 28 is formed as a half-nut to engage a screw 32 driven through a sprocket from the chain 15. A pivoted bail is operated by a handle at the end of the travel to raise the extension 30 from the screw whereupon the block 28 is returned to initial position by means of the spring. During travel of the bottle steel balls 42 drop in succession on to the bottle and these run down a conveyer 59 into a receptacle 56 and thence down a runway 52 to an impeller 44 which raises the column of balls in the tube 46 so that the next ball is pushed into the vertical tube 43. A spring operated hammer released by a snail cam may be substituted for the balls. In a further modification the balls are held in succession by an electromagnet the circuit of which is interrupted to release the balls.
