Abstract
552,322. Aircraft planes. BAKELITE, Ltd., DE HAVILAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., PHILIPPE, C. D., and TAMBLIN, W. A. Sept. 30, 1941, No. 12626. [Class 4] A slat for the leading edge of an aeroplane wing is constructed by securing to a core a stressed skin consisting of laminated fibrous sheets bonded together with synthetic resin and previously moulded to the required shape. A core comprising a wooden framework 13, 14 is shown covered by upper and lower preformed sheets 11, 12 secured by a hot or cold glue of the phenol-formaldehyde or ureaformaldehyde type. At the points where the slat is to be supported, inserts of laminated sheets bonded with synthetic resin are provided. Alternatively the core may consist of synthetic resin which, prior to hardening, has been expanded throughout its mass to form a reticulated structure. The coverinigs are formed in two stages. First a number of fabric sheets impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde synthetic resin are subjected to a pressure of 1000 lbs. per sq. in. for 40 minutes at 135‹ C. in a press with parallel platens. The compound sheet is then cut to the developed shape and hardened between dies of the required shape for 10 minutes at 150‹ C. under a pressure of 10 to 150 lbs. per sq. in. The same dies may be used for pressing the sheets onto the core while the adhesive is hardened.
