Abstract

552,287. Photo-electric gauging apparatus. MARTIN, C. S., KILBOURN, S. L., and COOKE, A. E. July 28, 1941, No. 9541. [Class 40 (iii)] An apparatus for gauging the dimensions of objects is provided with an arrangement of optical grids controlled by the gauging device to make corresponding variations in a light beam and with a light-sensitive cell, subjected to the light beam and connected to an electrical indicating instrument. As shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus comprises a base 10 and a contact finger 13 adjustable vertically to gauge an object between the base 10 and the finger 13. This finger is carried by a casing 11 adjustable vertically on a pillar 12 and containing a pair of grids 20, 21, Figs. 2 and 3, between lamps 15 and light-sensitive cells 16. The grids are supported by leaf springs 23, 24, and one of them is controlled by the finger 13, which is slidably mounted in the lower wall of the casing. The grids have a number of frames 20a ... 20f of different mesh associated with a corresponding number of lightsensitive cells 16 to give different sensitiveness of response. The cell giving the desired response is connected by a rotary switch 251 to the electrical measuring instrument, the dial of which is shown at 14. Limited stops and means for adjustment are provided. The gauging apparatus may be a spherometer. A single light-sensitive cell may be used and moved from one frame of the grid to another according to the sensitiveness desired. The Provisional Specification mentions also the use of coloured lamps giving indications of correct size, over size, and under size in place of the dial 14.
