Abstract

552,192. Calculating apparatus. CONE, F. S. B., and CONE, C. A. Sept. 22, 1941, No. 12215. [Class 106 (i)] [Also in Group XX] An educational appliance for use in teaching navigation comprises three superimposed cards, the middle and upper cards being of progressively decreasing size and independently rotatable relative to each other and to the lower card and each card bearing a scale having graduations numbered from 0 to 360 degrees in a clockwise direction adapted for inter-registration with each other so that at any one setting the corrected readings of any given reading on any one scale are obtainable from the other scales without requiring a pointer. Three circular cards a, b, c are secured together by a central rivet and are marked in degrees, and carry at the zero points the signs d, e, f for true, magnetic, and compass readings, respectively. By rotating the cards relatively to one another, problems involving true, magnetic and compass bearings, change of latitude or longitude, and back bearings can be solved. The middle and upper cards may be transparent. Specifications 316,460, [Class 106 (i)], 494,252 and 528,794 are referred to.
