552,137. Filtering liquids. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Sept. 19, 1941, No. 12090. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1940. [Class 46] [Also in Group IV] In the clarification of solutions of organic derivates of cellulose such as esters and ethers, vessels 1, 2 are charged with the solution to which filter aid has been added so as to produce a higher concentration in the solution in the vessel 2 which is first passed under pressure through a candle filter 16 to precoat it, and the solution from the vessel 1 is then passed under pressure through the filter at a higher temperature. The filter aid may be granular, e.g. diatomaceous or Fuller's earth or ground gypsum or limestone, or fibrous, e.g. disintegrated wood cellulose or short cotton or glass fibres. The solutions are forced by compressed air, supplied by a pipe 3 and a pump 13, to the filter, a constant pressure in the filter chamber 15 being maintained by a check valve 19 in a bypass 18. The filter is heated by a bath 27 and the filtered solution passes through a perforated pipe 21 and a pipe 22 to a pipe 28 in a cooling bath 30, a pressure gauge 23 and a thermometer 24 being provided.
