Abstract
551,617. Seats. VARMA, D. C. July 26, 1941, No. 9516. [Class 52 (iv)] A cushion seat comprises a resilient pad having a more or less central cavity and three areas more yielding than the main body of the pad, one area located behind the central cavity to receive the base of the pelvis, and the other two areas located at the sides of the central cavity to receive the thigh muscles. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, canvas-covered springs B are arranged between upper and lower wire frames A<1> of such shape as to leave a central cavity D<1> for the scrotum and three holes D, D<2>, D<2>, viz. a hole D which will register with the coccyx and the two ischium bones, and two holes D<2> to receive portions of the thigh muscles. Over the unit shown in Fig. 1, are imposed layers of sponge rubber, horsehair and wadding, the whole being finally covered with leather E<3> which is folded down into the opening D<1> to form an inclined recess D<3>. The resilience due to the presence of the holes may be afforded by the use of weaker springs or insets of rubber. The lower frame A<1> may be replaced by an uninterrupted wooden board. In a modification wherein the springs B are dispensed with, the cushion consists of two outer layers of sponge, rubber or other resilient material and an intermediate sheet of cork, light wood or metal provided with openings similar to those shown in Fig. 1 except that the opening D, D<1> is in two isolated portions. A leather cover is provided. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the cushion comprises two soft rubber pads J, K each moulded with recesses, forming when the pads are cemented together, yielding areas located in the positions of the holes described above. The recesses may be formed in one pad only or may be replaced by cavities formed by holes extending completely through the lower pad with or without recesses in the lower surface of the upper part. The holes may be formed through the complete pad and filled with soft resilient material. As applied to a squab for a motor car, the three yielding areas are provided by openings in two layers of sponge rubber N, Fig. 10, covered with horse hair R, wadding R<1> and leather S. The leather is folded into a surface trought similar to the trough D<3> shown in Fig. 2.
