Abstract
551,615. Knitting. NATIONAL SILK HOSIERY MILLS, Inc. May 30, 1941, No. 6949. Convention date, July 9, 1940. [Class 74 (ii)] Widening is effected on a straight-bar machine by laying yarn, while the needles are raised, on the beard side of an outer needle 1 added to the previous marginal needle 0 and to such an extent outwards beyond such added needle that after the yarn 21 has been carried down by the added needle and the needles are again raised with the yarn still in front of the added needle, the yarn without passing around the back of the added needle loops about the sinker c between the added needle and the next inward needle to form a loop 31 penetrated by the added needle at the next course. Two or more needles may be introduced at each step at each selvedge, the yarn being looped at each stage around the sinker between the outermost added needle and the next inward needle to form a loop which is subsequently an additional selvedge loop in the next course. The method, which may be used in the knitting of the heel or other part of a full-fashioned stocking, is applicable to machines having a number of alternately operative feeding devices for knitting ringless work. The loop 31 when it falls from the sinker c may take either of the forms shown in Figs. 9c, 10c or 11c, dependent upon the amount of twist in the yarn, each of which forms of loop is penetrated by the rising needle 1 and is knitted. Accidental non-penetration of the loop results in the formation of a loop such as 32, Fig. 15g, by the needle next inward of the added needle.
