Abstract

551,312. Exothermic chemical processes; hydrocarbons. GROOMBRIDGE. W. H., and PAGE R. June 13, 1941, No. 7485. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] In apparatus for conducting exothermic reactions wherein the reactior spares are cooled by contact with a liquid which is evaporated, the vapour of this liquid and the reaction products are withdrawn from the apparatus togeth'er. The figure shows an apparatus for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The reactants are supplied through tubes 8 to reaction tubes 11 immersed in a liquid 15. The reaction products pass out from the upper ends of the reaction tubes into the vapour space above the liquid bath, and are withdrawn with the vapour through exit 13. The liquid may be a salt solution or an organic liquid boiling at a suitable temperature under the pressure at which the reaction is conducted.
