Abstract

550,823. Locking nuts. DENNISON, E. A., and KENNEDY, D. S. Nov. 28, 1941, Nos. 15316/41 and 148/42. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Self-locking nuts in one piece are provided with a slot or saw-cut c of triangular shape, the base at the top of the nut being equal to the thickness of the metal of the nut and the apex being at the root of the thread at the bottom of the nut. The slot is partially closed by lateral compression. Instead of extending towards a corner as in Fig. 1, the slot may extend towards the centre of a side, the top of the slot in this case extending to the faces of the nut. The slot may be radial or in the case of large nuts, oblique or spiral. The width of the slot is such that, after compression of the nut completely to close the nut at its wide end, it springs open again to about half its orginal width as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7. The pressing is preferably effected asymmetrically by dies g, the nut being supported by an abutment i engaging two adjacent corners j. This causes one edge of the slot to project inwards and gives a ratchet action, further to resist unscrewing.
