Abstract
550,341. Airscrews. HUGHES & CO., Ltd., F. A., and LISLE, A. B. Aug. 7, 1941. No. 10059 [Class 114] [Also in Group XXII] An airscrew blade is made of magnesium, magnesium alloy, aluminium, aluminium alloy, or other light metal, and its tip and/leading edge is armoured with steel or other metal or alloy, resin, resin-treated wood, or other harder or more durable material, which is keyed to the blade by one or more deformations on one part forged or pressed into engagement with pre-formed portions in the other part. The deformations may be partly pre-shaped or formed wholly during the pressing or forging. Figs. 1, 3, 5, 6 show blades 20 with different forms of armouring 21. The latter may be positioned in a lower die block 33, Fig. 8, with integral studs 31 located against abutments 34 and keyed by clamps 35, the upper die 38 being recessed at 39 to accommodate the studs and clamps, and the studs being machined off after pressing or forging. An intermediate metallic film may be employed to facilitate welding. The armouring may be in one or more parts located at one or more places, and, for reversible blades, may extend also over the trailing edge.
