Abstract
549,948. Carrier telephony particularly over power lines. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 27, 1942, No. 4071. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1940. [Class 40 (iv)] A system of carrier telephony particularly over a power line PL employs a single carrier source 40 which may be located at one of the stations, for example the central station CO, or connected to the line at any suitable point. and to avoid differences of phase at stations remote from the source, the transmission is either restricted to a single side-band or if both side-bands are used those stations are provided with phase-correcting networks. If communication between the out-stations is desired, the networks should be adjustable in accordance with the various lengths of line that may be involved. Each station is provided with a rectifier-bridge 20 for modulation and demodulation and is connected to the line PL through a filter 32, phase-correcting network if required, transformer 34 and condenser 36, one wire of the line being grounded. Calling current is generated by an interrupter 30 under the control of a key 28 and is amplified to operate the bells 24 and a lamp 52 at the central station CO. The latter is provided with a jack 44 for interconnection with an extraneous system.
