Abstract

549,296. Lubricating oil compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. (Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I.). April 12, 1941, No. 4891. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Sludge inhibiting hydrocarbon lubricating oil compositions contain a small proportion of a polyvalent metal, acid or normal salt, of a hydroxyphosphonic acid of the formula RR'C(OH) PO(OH) 2 , wherein R or R' represent aliphatic or alicyclic groups in which the total number of carbon atoms is not less than 6. The additives specified are salts of 2-hydroxytrideoane-2-phosphonic acid, 2-hydroxynonadecane- 2-phosphonic acid, and naphthenylhydroxy-phosphonic acid, the salts being either acid or normal magnesium, zinc, calcium, barium, aluminium, lead, or nickel salts. The particular salts specified comprise a number of these metal, acid or normal salts, of 2-hydroxynonadecane-2-phosphonic acid, acid Zn 2-hydroxytridecane-2-phosphonate and Zn naphthenyl-hydroxyphosphonate. Less than 5 per cent. and preferably about 1 per cent of the additive is used. The hydroxyphosphonic acids are prepared by the interaction of the corresponding ketone with phosphorus trichloride followed by hydrolysis, the desired salt being then obtained by precipitation with a solution of a metal salt.
