Abstract

549,081. Organo-silicones. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 28, 1941, No. 5450. Convention date, April 30, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Organic silicols are condensed to polymeric silicones with the aid of a dehydrating agent capable of absorbing or chemically combining with water. Specified dehydrating agents are alkyl and aryl borates and orthoborates; antimony halides; oxides, halides and oxyhalides of phosphorus, sulphuric acid; boron halides; portland cement; amines, e.g. ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine and triethylene tetramine; activated alumina, and activated silica gel. A homogeneous dehydrator, i.e. one that does not separate as a distinct phase, is preferred. Dehydration may be effected with the aid of heat. Examples are given of the condensation of liquid methyl silicols to solid, polymeric silicones with the aid of ethyl borate, antimony pentachloride, sulphuric acid and ethylene diamine.
