Abstract

549,080. Knee and elbow protectors. DOCHERTY, M., and HUBNER, P. O. April 3, 1941 No. 4481. [Class 81 (ii)] A device for protecting the knee or elbow, which allows freedom of movement and prevents dust, stones, &c. entering between the protector and the leg or arm, comprises two or more portions hingedly connected together so that they may hinge relatively to one another without either moving away from or out of contact with the adjacent part of the leg or arm. As shown the protector is made of rubber the knee pad 1 being of concave shape hinged by studs or rivets 5 to a thickened concave cap 3 at the top of a shin guard 2. Rubber or other straps are provided at one side of the pad 1 and guard 2 and buckles at the other side, the top of the pad being dished so that when the strap 8 is fastened the pad closely engages the thigh; the straps 10 of the guard 2 are secured to the interior surface thereof at spaced points so that gaps are left between the straps and the guard when the latter are secured. The device may be reinforced with wire gauze and may be lined or the inner surface thereof may be soft. relatively to the hard outer surface. The lower end of the guard may be formed with a series of ribs 4a so that it may be trimmed to the length desired.
