Abstract
548,896. Glass manufacture. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH- (Hartford-Empire Co.). July 1, 1941, No. 8289. [Class 56] A clear transparent soda-lime glass is composed of 74.5-80 per cent. of silica, 1.5-6.0 per cent. of R 2 O 3 , 2.0-10.0 per cent. of RO, 10.0-14.5 per cent. of alkali, and 0.15-0.8 per cent. of fluorine. In this composition the term R 2 O 3 includes certain mixed oxides, principally alumina with relatively small amounts of iron oxide, zirconium oxide, and titanium oxide present as impurities. The term RO includes bivalent oxides, particularly lime, magnesia, zinc oxide, and barium oxide. Part of the alkali may be replaced by boric oxide, and colouring media may be added if required. A suitable batch consists of 1,000 parts by weight of sand, 300 parts of soda ash, 160 parts of dolomite, 150 parts of felspar, 10 parts of saltcake, 2 parts of nitre, 1 part of arsenic, and 15 parts of fluorspar. Compositions of a number of glasses, and a method of analyzing glass for fluorine, are given in the Specification.
