Abstract

548,143. Making screwed connectors. COOKE, N., and MINCHOM, R. I. Feb. 24, 1941, No. 2462. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] Workhalders; jigs.-In a method of and apparatus for making forked-head screwed components particularly for straining-wires in aircraft construction, all the drilling operations are performed in a first jig and one of the transverse holes so made is then used to locate the component in a second jig in which the milling of the head is performed. The drilling jig, Fig. 1, has a clamping portion 3 for securing the cylindrical shank of the work 2 against a V-block member consisting of inserted pins 7, Fig. 3, with flats arranged at 90 degrees. The ends of the pins are also flatted and are engaged by corresponding flat surfaces on a bush 9 inserted in the end wall 1a. Guide bushes 12, 13 serve for the drilling of axial holes in the head and shank portions of the work. A transverse hole in the head is drilled through the bush 10 and a small inspection hole in the shank is drilled through bush 11. After drilling, the bush 13 is withdrawn and the end of the shank spot-faced by a tool inserted through the bush 9. Finally the hole in the shank is tapped. The component is then inserted in a multiple milling-jig which comprises a series of sliding pins 16 adapted to engage the transverse holes in the heads of the work pieces 2. The shanks are clamped in pairs by clamping members 17 which hold the work against flatted pins 18. The clamps are carried on bolts 19 having rectangular washers 21 which can be turned through 90 degrees so as to engage recesses in the block 15 to permit insertion of the work pieces. The heads of the work pieces are milled to the form shown in Fig. 9 by a gang of milling cutters 25, 26, Fig. 8. Ten or more pairs of components may be mounted on the jig which is carried on the machine table and as the components leave the milling cutters they may be replaced by fresh blanks.
