Abstract
547,553. Automatic exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (Western Electric Co., Inc.). April 2, 1940, No. 5911. [Class 40 (iv)] In a system using a cathode-ray tube as a selector the beam is held in a deflected position by means of a circuit over itself. The invention is described with reference to a ten-line exchange in which each subscriber has a cathode ray selector. Normally the cathode beam impinges on the home terminal 23. When the dial is operated the bias on the grid of a valve 18 is intermittently reduced and the impulses are passed on to a further valve 19. The first impulse since it increases the current in valve 18 increases the voltage drop in a resistance 35, so modifies the voltage of the deflector plates to cause the beam to move to the next target. Here it completes the anode circuit of valve 19 via resistance 35 transformer primary 52 and a group of resistances 16. The resultant voltage drop in 35 is such as to hold the beam in its new position. The kick produced in the dial circuit by the transformer 20 is such as to neutralize the originating impulse. Subsequent impulses cause the deflection of the beam over the terminals in succession, the beam being held after the termination of each impulse because its movement has cut out one of the resistances 16 and so increased the steady anode current of valve 19. When the beam stops, a direct current calling circuit and subsequently a speech circuit exist over the beam shown and that of the wanted party in its home position. Filters 15 keep the speech currents out of the control circuits. When the calling party hangs up, the anode circuit of 19 is broken and the beam returns to its normal position.
