Abstract

547,163. Calculating apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (Bell Telephone Manufacturing Co.). Feb. 13, 1941, No. 1992. Drawings to Specification. [Class 106 (i)] In apparatus comprising an electrically operated calculating mechanism, a control unit including a printer for submitting a problem to the calculator, and means in the calculator for causing the printer to record the solution determined by the calculator, means are provided for causing the necessary punctuation signs or spaces to be exhibited in the printed result. The punctuation sign is also printed as part of the integral portion of the number, if necessary, submitted by the control unit. The apparatus described comprises a control unit with a set of digit keys, a set of control keys for transmitting operation signs, and a printer by means of which the problem submitted to, and the solution obtained by, the calculator may be recorded on a paper tape. The calculator itself includes code circuits for the conversion to and from code form of signals representing digits and operation signs ; distribution circuits for transmitting the digits of the numbers to appropriate accumulating switches ; input circuits for storing the values entered and decoding before transmission ; decimal point circuits for ascertaining the denominational values ; solution circuits comprising accumulating switches ; and transfer circuits for controlling the transmission of the values from the input circuits to the accumulator switches. The machine also includes multiplication-table circuits and quotient circuits for problems involving multiplication and division. The circuits are built up of relays step by step switches and resistances such as those used in telephone exchange systems. In subtract operations the complement with respect to " 9 ", of the digits of the number to be subtracted, are added and a subtraction correction effected by the addition of one unit in the lowest denomination. The step by step switches have eleven point positions in their cycle so that after a carry over correction they are caused to make one additional or compensation step to complete the cycle and assume a normal position.
