[Class 106 (i)] An electrically operated apparatus comprises an operator's control unit and a calculating unit, means for sending signals representing numbers and operation signs, means in the calculator responsive to signals representing a pair of numbers and a combination of operation signs for performing a calculating operation, means for sending the result of the computation to the control unit, and means for returning the operated parts to normal or for retaining one of the numbers as a factor in a further calculation depending on the particular combination of operation signs sent. The control unit comprises a single set of digit keys, a set of control keys for signalling the kind of operation, and a printer by means of which the data and signs submitted to, and the results obtained by, the calculator are recorded on a tape. The calculator comprises circuit arrangements including sets of relays, step by step switches and resistances. The Specification describes the sequence of operations in the performance of multiplication. In the arrangement described the first factor is set digit by digit, the multiplication key (X) is then depressed, the second factor is then entered in a similar manner and the various higher and lower partial products are accumulated and finally the equals key (=) is depressed. The resulting product is then transmitted to the printer and the operated parts restored. If it is desired to retain the first factor for a subsequent calculation a repeat key (R) is depressed instead of the multiplication key (X) and that factor is stored in the apparatus for further computations.
