A cash register, including a totalizer which can record the amount due, the amount tendered and the change owing in a sales transaction, includes a control device which, when the amount tendered is less than the amount due, halts a subsequent machine operation until a specific register key is pressed. The amount due is entered, then the amount tendered, and an Amount Tendered control key initiates a charge calculating operation during which sensing fingers 62 are disengaged from totalizer control plates 52, associated with an overdraft mechanism and sensing zero notches in the add pinions of the totalizer. When the operation is complete the sensing fingers re-engage the plates 52 and, if the amount tendered equals the amount due, sense notches 55 on plates 52 block detent 67 in position 1A. If the amount tendered is more than the amount due the totalizer is in a negative condition, and if the amount tendered is less than the amount due the totalizer is in a positive condition. In both cases the sensing fingers do not engage the notches 55 on plates 52 and the spring-driven detent 67 moves to one of two different engagement positions with a control member corresponding to positions 2A and 3A respectively on Fig. 7. A detent 69, connected to detent 67, extends along the control keys 1 to 9 and has a control detent 74 which moves with detent 69. When detent 67 moves to position 1A the key in position 1 is automatically depressed and zero change is printed on a receipt. When detent 67 moves to position 3A, detent 74 moves between the keys in positions 1 and 2, neither key is depressed and the register stops. The machine operator has then to press the key at position 5 and the balance due is printed on a receipt. If detent 67 moves to position 2A, the key in position 2 is depressed and a change dispenser operated.
