Abstract
547,034. Treating artificial silk articles with liquids &c. STEVENS, A. H. (Paramount Textile Machinery Co.). Feb. 4, 1941, No. 1476. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] A fabric article made of polyamide filaments is subjected to a pre-setting treatment, while it is in a substantially loose and unstressed condition and disassociated from any means for predetermining the shape of the article, with a setting medium at a predetermined temperature. It is then subjected to one or more of the customary scouring, dyeing, extracting, and related processes, and re-set to final shape on a form by the action of a setting medium at a temperature higher than that of the pre-setting medium. The polyamide may be polyhexamethylene adipamide or "Nylon." Water vapour or hot water may be used for the presetting treatment, and steam may be used for the final setting treatment. The process may be applied to the treatment of knitted goods such as stockings. The pre-setting may be effected at 120‹-212‹F. by means of the vapour of condensed steam. At the end of the treatment the receptacle may be opened to allow the goods to dry or the goods may be placed in a hot air heater. The dyeing, scouring, and other intermediate treatments are preferably carried out at temperatures below that of the presetting. For the final setting, the articles are placed on flat or oval forms which may be made of wood, aluminium, or steel. They may be subjected to saturated steam at 225‹F. for about five minutes.
