545,216. Synthetic resin compositions. CELLOMOLD, Ltd., DAVIES, D. N., and READ, L. M. Oct. 15, 1940, No. 15305. [Class 2 (iii)] A resinous moulding composition in the form of dry loose pieces having free flowing characteristics and adapted to be hot moulded into articles having high impact and tensile strengths and low water absorption comprises 25-75 per cent. of thermosetting resin and 75-25 per cent. of fibrous filler of which one quarter to the whole consists of string having an average diameter of at least 0.015 inch and an average length of at least “ inch and not more than 6 inches, the string and resin being irregularly mixed so that the individual fibres of the string are coated with resin. The string may be coated and impregnated with a liquid resin in a mixing machine having stirring arms not coacting with an anvil or scraper, or with a solution of resin in an edge runner mixer. Specified resins are phenolformaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde. A liquid phenol-formaldehyde is prepared by condensing phenol with aqueous formaldehyde, in the presence of sodium hydroxide, for 3¢ hours at 60‹C., then adding phosphoric acid and recovering the resin by vacuum distillation. Other fibrous fillers, e.g. cotton linters, wood flour or asbestos, and other ingredients, e.g. fluxes, e.g. lime or ammonia, cork dust, chopped fabric, pigments, dyes and lubricants, e.g. stearin or olein, may be added. After mixing the composition is broken up, if necessary, and dried. Examples are given of compositions involving phenol-formaldehyde resins.
