[Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In removing scale from the surface of a ferrous body by directing one or more flames or streams of oxidizing gas obliquely against and progressively along said surface, the flames &c. are moved in one direction relative to said surface, displaced about an axis parallel to the surface to reverse the direction of impingement, and then moved relatively in the reverse direction. The work S may be traversed by rollers 20, driven by a reversing motor, not shown, and acted on by heating or cutting gas projected from a block H resting on the work. The work may then be turned through 90 degrees or 180 degrees about its longitudinal axis to present a different upper surface by the device T, Fig. 4. A reversing motor M is then operated to rotate a gear. segment 30 connected to a trunnioned yoke 22 which carries the block H into the position shown in Fig. 3 and the work is traversed in the reverse direction. The segment 30 may carry stops 42, 43, which operate a limit switch in the circuit of the motor M, and springs 36 to allow for irregularities of the work. In a modification the flames act on the lower surface and in another they act on the top surface in one direction and after turning the block H through 180 degrees, on the lower surface in the reverse direction without turning the work. The gases and cooling water for the block H and nozzles are controlled by electrically or hand operated valves and supplied through flexible pipes. Specification 447,975, [Group XXII], is referred to.
