Abstract
544,165. Surface hardening metal articles. SHORTER PROCESS CO., Ltd. (Linde Air Products Co.). Oct. 12, 1940, No. 15197. [Class 72] An apparatus for surface hardening in succession a plurality of spaced surface portions of an elongated metal body, e.g. cams on a cam shaft, a heating unit for heating only a part of such surface portion is supported on a movable carriage which is engaged by locating means to position the heating unit opposite its corresponding surface portion, mechanism being provided to reciprocate the locating means, or when treating cylindrical portions on the body, e.g. the bearings at the end of the cam shaft to reciprocate the locating means and rotate the shaft. A cam shaft A having cams C and bearings B thereon is mounted between a fixed centre 14 on a shaft 13 carried on bearings 12 on arms 11 of a frame F having a bed 10 and a movable centre 18 mounted on a post 16 movable on the bed 10 and secured thereto by a clamp 17. Mounted in bearings 33 on one arm 11 and the post 16 is a rod R provided with locating means such as stops S which is adapted to be engaged by a fork 32 on a carriage U provided with rollers 21 journalled on stub shafts 22 carried by ears 23 and adapted to engage the side of a key or tongue 24 on a tube T which passes through the carriage and is pivotally mounted in bearings 25, 26 on the posts 11, 16. A bushing 27 is interposed between the tube T and the bearing 26, and is provided with a groove in which the tongue 24 slides when the post 16 is moved. Mounted by a clamp 36 in the upper part of an arm 29 forming the upper part of the carriage U and extending upwardly at an angle of 30 degrees from the cam shaft, Fig. 5, are the heating units H the heads 39 of which are connected by tubes 38 to a mixer for the combustible gases, such as acetylene and oxygen, and the flames 40 from which are directed against the opposite sides of the cam being treated. A quenching device Q comprises a head 43 supported between the heads 39 by a supply tube 44 secured to the clamp 36 by an auxiliary clamp 45 and is mounted at an angle to the head so that the stream of quenching water is directed against the apex 41 of the cam when the carriage U is moved slightly backward after the heating has been completed and spread over the heated surfaces of the cam. An indexing device T, Fig. 5, comprises an arm 47 pivoted on a pin 30 carried by the arm 29 and provided at its upper end with an indexing plate 48 adapted to engage the cam to be treated to position the heating unit H and quenching device Q accurately. The device I can be moved into and out of position by a handle 49. When the carriage U is moved into position the supply of'heating gases will be turned on by the engagement of adjustable pins or bolts 53 on an arm 50 provided with a split ring 51 at one end, Fig. 2, and clamped by a bolt 52 on the end of the tube T, with buttons 54 of a valve V, to which the gases are supplied by hoses 55, outlet hoses 56 carrying the gases to the blowpipe body 35. When the surface of the cam has been heated outer end a roller 59. When the carriage U is moved backwardly from the cam shaft and the supply of gases turned off by the raising of the arm 50 and when the latter has been moved back far enough to contact with a stop 63 the indexing device I can then be used. To turn on the quenching medium automatically, the arm 56 is provided with a pivoted link 58 having at its outer end a roller 59. When the carriage U is moved forwardly the link 58 will pivot upwardly and the roller 59 will pass over the plunger 60 of a valve V<SP>1</SP> in the supply pipe 62 connected by hose to the tube 44 of the quenching device Q. When the carriage U is moved backwardly the roller 59 will engage and depress the plunger 60 thus turning on the quenching medium. For the reciprocation of the rod R a pin 73 formed integrally with, and extending from the side of, a clamp 74 secured to the rod, is engaged by a fork 72 which forms the shorter arm of a bell crank 69, the longer arm of which is provided with a roller 71 which follows the periphery of a cam plate 68 mounted on a shaft 67 driven by a speed reducer 66 driven by a motor M mounted on a bracket 65 secured to the post 11. To rotate the shaft A when the bearings B are being treated, the shaft 13 is driven by a gear 76, Fig. 6, geared to a spur 75 keyed to the shaft 67. A pinion 77 always in mesh with the gear 75 is adapted to be moved into engagement with gear 76 by a handle 78 extending from a bracket 79 which is pivoted on the shaft 67. The gear 77 is mounted on a pin 80 passing through, and secured to, the upper end of the two legs of the bracket 79, which may be provided with a toggle mechanism to ensure that the pinion 77 will not mesh with gear 76 when a cam is being treated. The toggle mechanism comprises a rod 81 pivoted at its upper end on a pin 83 between the lower end of the two legs of the bracket 79 and provided at its lower end with a spring-controlled fork 82 which has at its lower end a washer 86 engaging the rod R, a spring 84 keeping it in position. A stop 87 limits the movement of the bracket 79 and thus prevents further outward movement of the pinion 77 when it is moved out of gear with gear 76.
