Abstract

545,052. Directive wireless signalling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 29, 1940, No. 17055. Convention date. Feb. 17. [Class 40 (v)] A radio communication system comprises a steerable multi-unit antenna array and a translation device coupled to each antenna unit through a phase adjuster. Each of the phase adjusters comprises a variable impedance individual to an antenna unit and a phase splitting or combining network, for a transmitter or receiver respectively, common to all the variable impedances and coupled or connected in circuit between the variable impedances and the translating device. Antenna-counterpoise units 1 may each have a directive characteristic on a non- directive characteristic and together constitute an array for receiving an incoming signal over two diversity paths A, B. The units are connected through transformers 3, 4, 5 to the rotors 25 of phase-control variable condensers, one set 24 for the diversity branch A and the other set 31 for diversity branch B. Each condenser has four stators, corresponding stators in each diversity branch being connected together and to a terminal of a phase-combining network 42 comprising condensers 13, 14, 15, 16, coils 17, 18, and a resistance 19. The output terminals of each network 42 are connected to the receiver 39, a delay device 34 being included in branch A. The rotors 25 of condensers 24 are adjusted so that the out-of-phase potentials impressed thereon produce in-phase potentials on the output terminals for waves having the direction A and the rotors 25 of condensers 31 are adjusted to secure in-phase output potentials for a wave having direction B. Specifications 496,027 and 503,582 are referred to.
