Abstract
544,993. Packeting. FORGROVE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., RUSSELL, A., HARRIS, R. A.,and PARKER, M. Feb. 3, 1941, No. 1429. [Class 94 (i)] A wrapping-machine comprises means for folding around the body of an article a main wrapper having serrated ends that project beyond the ends of the article, means for applying wrappers to the ends of the article, and devices, for folding the serrations of the main wrapper down over the end wrappers to hold the latter in position. An outer wrapper may be applied to one or both ends of the article over the folded serrations. The machine is especially suitable for wrapping a main wrapper 33, Fig. 3, around a cylindrical article 32, the end wrappers 35, 36, Fig. 5, being in the form of circular discs. The wrappers may be made of waxed paper or other heatsealable material, but it is preferred to secure them by adhesive. After the serrated ends of the main wrapper have been opened out, as shown in Fig. 5, a paper disc 35 is applied to one end of the article and a cardboard disc 36 to the' other end, and the serrations are then folded down over the end discs and secured in place by layers of gum b, c on the end discs. An outer disc 37, Fig. 7, is then applied over the paper disc 35 and secured by a ring of gum d to complete the package. The articles are fed to the machine in a procession by a conveyer 83, Fig. 10 consisting of a fixed inner pair of notched rails and an outer pair of movable notched rails which lift the articles from notch to notch of the fixed rails. The articles are lifted in succession by.a plunger from the conveyer into the lowermost pocket of a wrapping wheel 41, a main wrapper being carried by the article into the pocket and thereby folded around the article, as shown in Fig. 3. The wrapper is removed from a magazine by a suction peeler, as described in Specification. 492,787, [Group XVI], and is carried by two suction pads to a position where it is engaged by the article. as the latter is lifted. The wheel 41 is rotated step by step, and as soon as the article and the wrapper are gripped in the pocket the wheel moves one step and the edges of the wrapper are folded over one another by movable and fixed tuckers. The feeding of the main wrapper and the end discs is effected by suction-controlled mechanism as described in Specification 545,002, and the mechanism also includes a detector for testing the presence of each article in its proper place on the conveyer. This mechanism interrupts the wrapper feed if an article is missing or is improperly wrapped. The 'serrated ends of the wrapper are next spread outwards by rotating fingers, and the article is then carried to the next stopping-position where the inner discs are applied to the ends of the article and the serrations folded over. The article is again moved by the wheel 41 to a position where the outer disc is applied to one end. The cardboard discs are taken from a magazine 103 by a suction device and the inner paper discs are taken from a magazine'104 by two fingers 107, Fig. 15, which grip the edges of the lowest disc by suction. The fingers are partly rotated to bend the disc downwards to withdraw it from the'magazine, and then the finger moves outwards to a gumming-position. The discs are taken from the suction devices by gumming- rings 143, 143<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 10, which descend on the rings and hold them. Carriers then come into position beneath the discs and grip them by suction after they have been stripped from the gumming rings. The carriers then rotate and deliver the discs to suction barrels which apply them to the ends of the article, after which the serrations are closed over the gummed faces of the discs. The outer discs are similarly extracted from a magazine 105 and applied over one end of each article. The wrapped article 32, Fig. 26, is transferred longitudinally by a plunger 270 from the wrapping wheel to a pocket in a transfer wheel 269 which rotates intermittently in synchronism with the wrapping wheel. At each stoppage of the transfer wheel, a plunger 271 moves forward and presses the wrapped article against a presser disc 272 to complete the pressing down of the front serrations ' and to ensure their adhesion to the inner cardboard disc. Finally, the package is ejected from the transfer wheel into a discharge shoot. Specification 396,212 also is referred to.
