Abstract

544,969. Filters. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 19, 1941, No. 3750. Convention date, March 27, . 1940. Drawings to Specification. [Class 46] [Also in Groups II and XXXIV] Porous metal articles such as filter elements, having varying porosities from one side to another either gradually or in steps, are made by depositing on each other metal particles of different grain sizes and sintering them together. The sintering may be effected in stages after successive deposition of layers of different grain sizes. Deposition may be effected by agitating a mixture of metal powders of varying grain sizes in air or in a liquid such as an organic liquid and causing the particles to settle by gravity, or by distributing a layer of mixed particles on a supporting surface and agitating the surface mechanically or electrically. The particles may be deposited on a backing such as of steel, which may be perforated or may have a plated or oxidized surface, and the sintering may bond the mass to the backing. Successive layers may be of different compositions. The. production of bronze articles from copper-tin powders is referred to.
