Abstract

544,966. Stud-and-socket fasteners. UNITEDCARR FASTENER CORPORATION. March 3, 1941, No. 2823. Convention date, March 26, 1940. [Class 44] Stud and socket fasteners, particularly described as applied to the covering 4 of a vacuumoperated top of a motor vehicle, are provided with means laterally adjacent to the fasteners which serves to effect automatic separation of the fasteners when they are pulled laterally, as when the cover 4 is moved to the left, Fig. 2, during movement of the top to the rear of the vehicle in the folding-back operation. As shown, the stud comprises a tubular shank 19 loosely mounted in an aperture in the base of a cuplike attachment member 7 and held in central position by a spring 21 bearing against the base of the cup and a flange 19a at the upper end of the shank. A cup-like stud head 16 has a peripheral bead 14 adapted to snap into engagement with a spring 26 in the socket-member 25 which is secured to cover 4 by a rivet 27 extending from a cap 28. The head has a metal filling- piece 17 between which and an inturned flange at the base of the head the flange 19a of the shank is secured. Spring 21 is strong enough to hold the stud head projected above the cup 7 during the fastening operation, but allows the stud to rock when cover 4 is pulled laterally. The stud is retained in the cup by an external flange 20. The cup 7 has an integral flange 6 secured to the body 2 by rivets 13 and provided with an embossed arcuate upstanding rib 23 adjacent one side of the cup, the rib having an inclined cam surface 24 up which the socket rides when cover 4 is pulled to the left, this upward movement effecting separation of stud and socket. A modification is described in which the shank is pivotally mounted in cup 7 on a transverse pin and spring 21 is replaced by a filling of resilient material such as sponge rubber on which the head of the stud rests.
