Abstract
544,847. Sewing-machines. BAGPAK, Inc. Aug. 31, 1940. No. 13689. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1939. [Class 112] The mouth of a filled sack or heavy duty paper bag is closed, by stitching, which may overlie a reinforcing cord, on either or each face of the bag, and by a tape folded lengthwise over the mouth of the bag and stuck down over both sides of the stitching as described in U.S.A. Specification 1,913,825. The bags are carried past the sewing and other devices by a conveyer table, which can be adjusted to suit the height of the bags. Levers which project across the path of the bag mouth are used to start the sewing-machine and to cause the thread-severing and tape-severing devices to operate. These levers operate switches in the circuits of solenoids which provide the power for operating the sewing-machine clutch and for removing the detents that hold the springs which operate the severing devices. The whole machine is electrically driven through a clutch which can be opened by means of a foot treadle. The mouth of the bag is positioned by a guide plate 52, Figs. 4 and 26, as it approaches the stitching head 54. The bag moves the lever 384 out of its path and the sewing-machine is started thereby. When a second lever 514 rides off the trailing edge of the bag thread-severing shears 62 are operated ; these shears also cut the reinforcing cord or cords, if used. The stitched mouth passes under a second positioning guide 248 and is covered by an adhesive tape. This tape 546 passes over an adhesiveapplying roller 552, and other rollers 556, 564 to a folding guide 566 which folds it into U-form over the moutn as seen in Fig. 18, wherein the stitching is shown at 516 and a reinforcing cord at 520. During this operation the mouth is being guided and fed by a series of four pairs of rollers, the last pair 284, 286 being integral with other rollers 198, 230 which feed the adhesive tape forward with the bag mouth. When a lever 656 rides off the trailing end of the bag mouth, tape-severing shears 64 are operated and thereafter the bag mouth passes between pairs of rollers 216, 200 which press the adhesive tape on to the mouth. Prior to the application of the tape, guiding surfaces, associated with .the positioning guide 248, fold the chain of stitches (and the cord. if any) in front of the leading end of the mouth, back against the line of the seam and it is held there by the tape. The sewing head may be as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,043,149. It is provided with a multiplate clutch and a brake 330. One of each pair of tape-feeding and tape-pressing rollers is mounted so that it can be moved away from its fellow for cleaning. Also the tape-folding guide is arranged for easy removal. The switches 476, 680, Fig. 26, controlling the thread- and tape-severing devices are operated from the levers 514, 656 by trips 488, 670 which have upturned forward ends so that when moved inwards they ride over associated rollers 486, 674 and actuate the rollers only on the return movement when released by the trailing end of the bag mouth. The lever 384 closes the switch 366 of the sewing-machine motor when moved by the leading end of the bag mouth and is held by a detent 392. The stitching, therefore, continues after the bag has left the lever 384 and until the detent 392 is tripped by the operation of the thread-severing device.
