  • a. sewing means for applying a line of stitching through a desired number of layers of material
  • tensioning means mounted adjacent said sewing means in advance of the line of stitching being applied thereby for supplying a strip of elastic material to said sewing means and for cooperating with said sewingmeans to tension the elastic strip into an extended condition thereof so that the elastic strip may be stitched to any desired material in the extended condition thereof, said elastic strip tensioning means being pivotally mounted for assuming a first position in the line of feed to said sewing means when supply ing the strip of elastic material thereto and for assuming a second position out of the line of feed to said sewing means when no strip of elastic material is to be fed to said sewing means; and
  • cutting means mounted between said sewing means and said tensioning means for cutting the elastic strip after a desired length of same has been supplied to said sewing means, said cutting means comprising a pair of movable scissors-type cutting blade means mounted for linear reciprocating movement into the line of feed of the elastic strip when a cutting action is desired and out of the line of feed of the elastic strip when no cutting action is desired, and means cooperating with said cutting blade means for moving said cutting blade means into cutting engagement with each other and with the elastic strip upon movement thereof into the line of feed of the elastic strip.
  • Sewing apparatus as set forth in claim 2, further including stop means associated with said tensioning means for positioning said tensioning means in a predetermined location in said second position whereby the elastic strip cutting means may be actuated to cut the elastic strip a predetermined distance from said tensioning means so that a leading portion of elastic strip equal to the distance between said tensioning means in the first position thereof and said sewing means protrudes from said tensioning means to allow the elastic strip to be placed in engagement with said sewing means when said tensioning means is again placed in said first position.
  • a cutting attachment adapted for use with a sewing machine applying a line of stitching to a desired number of layers, said attachment comprising:
  • elongate plunger means having scissors-type cutting blades on the forward end thereof in which at least one of said blades is movable with respect to the other of said blades, said plunger means being mounted for linear reciprocating movement for moving said cutting blades into overlapping relationship with the material to be cut when a cutting action is desired and out of overlapping relationship with the material when no cutting action is desired;
  • cam means mounted in cooperative relationship with said cutting blades for camming said cutting blades into cutting engagement with each other upon movement of said cutting blades by said plunger means into overlapping relationship with the material to, be cut;

WILLIAMS BYM 41 5 I ATTOR NE Y5 COMBINATION SEWING APPARATUS AND IMPROVED CUTTING MEANS THEREIN This invention relates to sewing apparatus and more specifically to sewing apparatus including a tensioning means for supplying a stretched strip of elastic material to the sewing means and so arranged as to assume a position out of the line of feed when no elastic material is desired, improved cutting means for cutting the strip of elastic material and being so arranged as to assume positions in and out of the line of feed when a cutting action is desired and when no cutting action is desired, edge binding strip guide and folding means for supplying a folded strip of binding material to the sewing means, and second cutter means on the other side of the sewing means for cutting the binding strip and the line of stitching after the sewing operation has been completed.
Heretofore, in sewing operations, particularly sewing operations involving the stitching of a strip of elastic material to a portion of the edge of any desired material, such as in the formation of contoured or fitted bed sheets, there have been problems in providing the necessary apparatus to be used in conjunction with a conventional sewing machine for feeding the various strips of elastic material and overedge binding material and for performing the desired cutting actions of these various materials. Various apparatus have been proposed for utilization with a sewing machine for providing the above operations and particularly in the formation of stretch or contoured bed sheets. However, all of the prior combinations of sewing apparatus, tensioning apparatus, strip feeding apparatus and cutting apparatus have been so located and operate in such a manner that an operator of these apparatus has been necessarily inconvenienced by the location of these various mechanisms directly in the line of feed of the material to the sewing machine.
This problem has been particularly acute with respect to the elastic strip cutting means and tensioning means such that, when a portion of a bed sheet was being stitched which did not utilize elastic strips therein, these mechanism were in the operator's way' and hindered the sewing operation. 'Accordingly, it was found necessary in most prior manufacturing operations to use separate sewing machines for the stitching of the portions of the fitted bed sheet which did not utilize elastic strips and for stitching the portions which did utilize elastic strips. Also, the prior elastic strip cutting apparatus have not proved satisfactory for cutting of raw rubber strips when the same are to be utilized as the elastic strips inthe manufacture of a fitted bed sheet or in the formation of any product in which an elastic strip is to be stitched to other material.
Accordingly, it is the object of this invention to provide the desired combination of apparatus in a single sewing machine for the satisfactory stitching of a contoured or fitted bed sheet and to so locate and arrange the operation of such apparatus so that the same may be easily moved out-of the way of the operator when the use thereof is not desired.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an improved cutting mechanism for use in a sewing apparatus for satisfactorily cutting elastic strips, such as raw rubber or otherwise, and which is so positioned that it is out of the line of feed of such strips when the operation thereof is not desired.
It has been found that the above objects may be accomplished by this invention by providing sewingapparatus comprising in combination the following mechanisms. Sewing means for applying a line of stitching through a desired number of layers of material. Tensioning means mounted adjacent said sewing means in advance of the line of stitching being applied thereby for supplying a strip of elastic material to the sewing means and for cooperating with the sewing means to tension the elastic strip into an extended or stretched condition thereof so that the elastic strip may be stitched to the material in the extended condition; Cutting means mounted between the sewing means and the tensioning means for cutting the elastic strip after a desired length of same has been supplied to the sewing means and comprising a pair of movable scissors-type cutting blades mounted for linear reciprocating movement into the line of feed of the elastic strip when a cutting action is desired and out of the line of feed of the elastic strip when no cutting action is desired. The cutting means includes means for moving the cutting blades into cutting engagement with each other and with the elastic strip upon movement thereof into the line of feed of the elastic strip. Edge binding strip guide and folding means mounted between the elastic strip cutting means and the sewing means for guiding and folding a stripof edge binding material in a generally inverted C-shaped configuration to the sewing means for overlapping the elastic strip and the edge of material and for being stitched thereto. A second cutter means disposed adjacent the sewing means on the other side thereof from the first elastic strip cutting means, the elastic strip ten sioning means and the edge binding strip guide and folding means for cutting the edge binding .strip and the line of stitching afier the desired edge binding and sewing have been completed.
The first cutting means preferably comprises an elongate plunger means having scissors-type cutting blades on the forward end thereof in which at least one of the cutting blades is movable with respect to the other of the blades. The plunger means is mounted for linear reciprocating movement for moving the cutting blades into overlapping relationship with the material to be cut when a cutting action is desired and out of overlapping relationship with the material when no cutting action is desired. The cutting means further includes cam means mounted in cooperative relationship with the cutting blades for camming the cutting blades into cutting engagement with each other upon movement of the cutting blades by the plunger means into overlapping relationship with the material to be cut.
The elastic strip tensioning means preferably is pivotally mounted for assuming a first position in the line of feed of the sewing means when supplying the strip of elastic material thereto and for assuming a second position out of the line of feed of the sewing means when no strip of elastic material is to be fed thereto. The tensioning means further preferably includes a stop means associated therewith forpositioning the tensioning means in a predetermined location in the second position thereof whereby the elastic strip cutting means may be actuated to cut the elastic strip a predetermined distance from the tensioning means so that a leading portion of elastic strip equal to the distance between the tensioning means in the first or forward position thereof and the sewing means protrudes from the tensioning means to allow the elastic strip to be placed in engagement with the sewing means when the tensioning means is again placed in the first position.

Referring now to the drawings, the combination sewing apparatus of this invention is illustrated in FIGS. 15. This combination sewing apparatus comprises sewing means, generally indicated by the reference numeral 10, including the usual stitching needle 11, presser foot 12, feed dogs under the presser foot (not shown), bed plate 13, etc. This sewing means is conventional and operates in a manner well-known to those with ordinary skill in the art for applying a line of stitching S to any desired numberot layers of material M and, therefore, further explanation of the operation thereof is not deemed necessary for a proper understanding of this invention. Mounted on the bed plate 13 of the sewing means adjacent thereto and in advance of the line of stitching S being applied thereby is a tensioning means 15 for supplying a strip of elastic material E to the sewing means 10 and for cooperating therewith to tension the elastic strip E in an extended or stretched condition thereof so that the elastic strip E may be stitched to the edge of the material M in the extended condition thereof, as shown particularly in FIG. 2.
The tensioning means 15 comprises the following component parts. A stationary plate 16 bolted or otherwise secured to the bed plate 13 of the sewing means 10. An elongate arm 17 pivotally mounted on one end thereof by bolt 18 to the stationary plate 16 for swinging movement between a first position and a second position, to be described below. Attached to the forward end of the arm 17 is a first guide plate 19 and a second guide plate 20 superimposed thereon and adjustably secured thereto by screw 21 such that the space between guide plates 19 and 20 may be adjusted. The guide plates 19 and 20 are so configured as to receive the strip of elastic material E, provide frictional resistance thereto by adjustment of the space between guide plates through the screw 21, and for guiding the strip of elastic material E to the sewing means 10 when the arm 17 is in the aforesaid first position thereof.
The above-described tensioning means 15, as discussed briefly above, may be moved to a first position, as shown in FIG. 2, in which the guide plates 19 and 20 are positioned in the line of feed to the sewing means 10 and thereby guide the strip of elastic material E into the sewing means 10 and cooperate with the sewing means 10, i.e. presser foot 12 and feed dogs, to tension the strip of elastic material E into an extended or stretched condition thereof by providing frictional resistance to the passage of the strip of elastic material between the guide plates 19 and 20. When it is not desired to utilize a strip of elastic material in the sewing operation of the sewing means 10, the tensioning means 15 may be moved to the aforesaid second position thereof, as shown in FIG. 1, in which the guide plates 19 and 20 and the entire tensioning mechanism 15 is out of the line of feed to the sewing means and therefore out of the way of the operator.
The tensioning means 15 further includes a stop means 22 which may be in the form of a knob or protuberance secured to the stationary plate 16 and adapted to engage the pivoted arm 17 upon rearward movement thereof for positioning the arm 17 and the entire tensioning mechanism 15 in a predetermined location in the aforesaid second position thereof for purposes to be discussed below.
The combination sewing apparatus further includes improved cutting means, generally indicated by the reference numeral 30, mounted between the sewing means 10 and the tensioning means 15 for cutting the elastic strip E after a desired length of same has been supplied to the sewing means 10. The cutting means 30 comprises an elongate plunger member 31 having scissors-type cutting blades 32 and 33 on the forward end thereof. The cutting blade 32 is stationary and may be formed as an integral extension to the forward end of the plunger member 31 and the cutter blade 33 is movable by being pivotally mounted on the forward end of the plunger member 31 in overlying cooperating relationship with the stationary blade 32 such that it may be pivoted into a scissorstype cutting engagement with the stationary blade 32. The plunger member 31 is slidingly mounted in a stationary, inverted U-shaped carriage member 35 which is secured to the bed plate 13 of the sewing means 10 in any convenient manner.
By this arrangement, the plunger member 31 is mounted for linear reciprocating movement for moving the cutting blades 32 and 33 into the line of feed of the elastic strip E to the sewing means 10 and into overlapping relationship therewith, as may be seen in FIGS. 3 and 4, for performing a cutting action when desired and out of overlapping relationship with the elastic strip E and out of the line of feed to the sewing means 10 when no cutting action is desired, as shown in F168. 1 and 2.
The cutting means 30 further comprises cutting blade biasing means 37 in the form of a spring attached to a rearward extension of the movable cutter blade 33 and to a pin extending from the rear end of the plunger member 31 so as to bias the movable cutter blade 33 into an open position away from cutting engagement with the stationary blade 32.
For moving the movable cutter blade'33 into cutting en gagement with the stationary blade 32, there is provided a cam means 38 in the form of a camming roller secured to the end of a plate attached to the top of carriage member 35 and so located to engage a cutout carnming surface on the inside of movable blade 33 which is so configured that, as the plunger member 31 is moved forward to move the blades 32 and 33 into overlapping engagement with the strip of elastic material E in the line of feed to the sewing means 10, the cam means 38 will move the pivotal cutting blade 33 into cutting engagement with the stationary blade 32, as may be seen in FIG. 3.
The cutting means 30 further comprises plunger biasing means 39 in the form of a spring connected at one end to a pin extending from the U-shaped carriage 35 and connected at the other end to a pin extending from a plate 40 attached to the side of plunger member 31 so as to normally bias the plunger member 31 and the cutting blades 32 and 33 into the rearward position thereof, shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. v
For correctly positioning the plungermember 31 and the cutting blades 32 and 33 in the rearward position out of the line of feed to the sewing means 10 and in the forward position for a cutting action in the line of feed to the sewing means 10, there are provided stop means. The stop means for correctly positioning the aforesaid members in the rearward position thereof comprises the aforesaid plate 40 attached to the side of the plunger member 31 which will engage the carriage 35 upon the rearward movement of the plunger 31 under the influence of biasing means 37 to limit the rearward movement thereof. The other stop means comprises a projection 41 extending from the rear top surface of the plunger member 31 and adapted to engage the carriage 35 upon forward movement of the plunger 31 to limit the forward motion thereof and to correctly position the cutting blades 32 and 33 in the line of feed to the sewing means 10 and in overlapping relationship with the strip of elastic material E for performing the cutting action, as shown in MG. 4.
For moving the plunger member 31 and the blades 32 and 33 to their forward position in the line of feed to the sewing means 10, there is provided a manually operated lever arm 42 which is pivotally mounted at its forward end to the plate 16 and which may include a roller member 43 on the forward end thereof for contacting the rear end of the plunger member 31 and which may include a hand plate 44 on the other end thereof such that if an operator pushes against the hand plate the forward end of the lever 42 will swing forward to push the plunger member 31 against the bias of biasing spring 33 to move the plunger member 31 and thecutting blades 32 and 33 to their forward position in the line of feed to the sewing means for performing a cutting action.
The combination sewing apparatus of this invention further includes edge binding strip guide and folding means, generally indicated in the drawings at 50. This guide and folding means 50 is mounted on the bed plate 13 between the elastic strip cutting means 30 and the sewing means for receiving, guiding and folding a strip of edge binding material B in a generally inverted C-shaped configuration to the, sewing means 10 for overlapping the elastic strip E and the edge of the material M and for being stitched thereto, as shown in FIG. 2. This edge binding strip guide and folding means 50 is of a conventional type including a guiding channel of the same width as an open strip of edge binding material B at its rear end and which converges and forms a generally inverted C-shaped configuration at its forward end for folding and guiding the binding strip B in the folded inverted C-shaped configuration.
The combination sewing apparatus further includes a second cutting means, generally indicated at 60, mounted adjacent the sewing means 10 on the other 'side thereof from the improved cutting means 30, the elastic strip tensioning means 15 and the edge'binding strip guide and folding means 50, as
shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. This cutting means 60 may be of any conventional type which may be utilized for-cutting the edge binding strip and the line of stitching after the sewing operation has been completed and on the trailing end of the sewing operation. a
As shown in the drawings, this cutting mechanism 60 is of a scissors-type which is manually operated'by a lever arm 61 and is of a type in which the cutting blades thereof are held in the position illustrated in the drawings. If further details are required for the operation of this cutter, reference may be had to US. Pat. No. 2,291,839, issued Aug. 4, 1942.
The above-defined apparatus is particularly adaptable for use in stitching operations for the formation of a fitted or contoured bed sheet of the type illustrated in FIG. 6 and designated broadly therein by the referencenumeral 70. This fitted bed sheet 70 has stitched comer portions 71 which .ntilize overedge binding strips B for uniting the .cut edges thereof but which do not utilize elastic strips E.'The bed sheet 70 further includes transversely extending stretchable portions 72 which utilize binding strips B in combination with elastic strips E so as to form a gathered stretchable edge. This is ac complished by stitching in the elastic strip E in the stretched condition thereof-in a manner well-known to those with ordinary skill in the art.
For the complete stitching of the bed sheet 70 on the abovedefined combined sewing apparatus, the corner portions 71 would be stitched first and inasmuch as the elastic strips E are not utilized in these portions, the tensioning mechanism 15 and the cutting mechanism 30 will be positioned out of the line of feed to the sewing means 10, as shown in FIG. 1', allowing only the binding strip B to be stitched around the two cut edges of the material M forming the corner portions 71 of the bed sheet 70. Following the completion. of each corner portion 71, the cutting mechanism 60 may be actuated to cut off the binding strip B and the line of stitching S on the trailing side of the sewing means 10.
After the corner portions 71 of the bed sheet 70 have been stitched, the stretch portions 72 utilizing both elastic strips E and binding strips B may be stitched by placing the elastic strip tensioning mechanism 15 in the position shown in FIG. 2 which allows the same to be stitched to the edge of the material M and between the folded inverted C -shaped binding strip B in the stretched condition thereof for forming a stretchable edge.
Following the formation of each of the stretchable portions 72 of the bed sheet 70, the tensioning mechanism 15 may be moved to its rearward position, as shown in FIG. 3, which will further stretch the elastic strip B. When the tensioning mechanism is stopped in its predetermined rearward position,
when the cutting means 30 is actuated, a leading-portion of I elastic strip E equal to the distance between the tensioning means in its forward position and the sewing means will be left protruding from the tensioning means, as shown in FIGS. 1
and 4, to allow the elastic strip to be again placed in engagcment with the sewing means 10 when the tensioning means is again placed in its forward position.
Accordingly, it may be seen that this invention has provided a combination sewing apparatus in a single sewing machine for the satisfactory stitching of a contoured or fitted bed sheet and in which the component parts thereof are so located and arranged that they may be easily moved out-of the way of the operator when use thereof is not required and has provided an improved cutting mechanism of the scissors-type for satisfactorily cutting elastic strips, particularly raw rubber, and which is located out of the line of feed of the elastic strips when operation thereof is not desired. a
In the drawings and specification, there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and, although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. Sewing apparatus comprising in combination:
a. sewing means for applying a line of stitching through a desired number of layers of material;
b. tensioning means mounted adjacent said sewing means in advance of the line of stitching being applied thereby for supplying a strip of elastic material to said sewing means and for cooperating with said sewing means to tension the elastic strip into an extended condition thereof so that the elastic strip may be stitched to any desired material in the extended condition thereof;
. cutting means mounted between said sewing means and said tensioning means for cutting the elastic strip aficr a desired length of same has been supplied to said sewing means, said cutting means comprising a pair of movable scissors-type cutting blade means mounted for linear reciprocating movement into the line of feed of the elastic strip when a cutting action is desired and out of the line of feed of the elastic strip when no cutting action is desired, and means cooperating with said cutting blade means for moving said cutting blade means into cutting engagement with each other and with the elastic strip upon movement thereof into the line of feed of the elastic strip;
d. edge binding strip guide and folding means mounted between said elastic strip cutting means and said sewing means for guiding and folding a strip of edge binding material in a generally inverted C-shaped configuration to said sewing means for overlapping the elastic strip and the edge of the material and for being stitched thereto; and
second cutter means disposed adjacent said sewing means on the other side thereof from said first elastic strip cutting means, said elastic strip tensioning means and said edge binding strip guide and folding means for cutting the edge binding strip and line of stitching after the desired v edge binding and sewing has been completed.
2. Sewing apparatus comprising in combination:
a. sewing means for applying a line of stitching through a desired number of layers of material;
b. tensioning means mounted adjacent said sewing means in advance of the line of stitching being applied thereby for supplying a strip of elastic material to said sewing means and for cooperating with said sewingmeans to tension the elastic strip into an extended condition thereof so that the elastic strip may be stitched to any desired material in the extended condition thereof, said elastic strip tensioning means being pivotally mounted for assuming a first position in the line of feed to said sewing means when supply ing the strip of elastic material thereto and for assuming a second position out of the line of feed to said sewing means when no strip of elastic material is to be fed to said sewing means; and
c. cutting means mounted between said sewing means and said tensioning means for cutting the elastic strip after a desired length of same has been supplied to said sewing means, said cutting means comprising a pair of movable scissors-type cutting blade means mounted for linear reciprocating movement into the line of feed of the elastic strip when a cutting action is desired and out of the line of feed of the elastic strip when no cutting action is desired, and means cooperating with said cutting blade means for moving said cutting blade means into cutting engagement with each other and with the elastic strip upon movement thereof into the line of feed of the elastic strip.
3. Sewing apparatus, as set forth in claim 2, further including stop means associated with said tensioning means for positioning said tensioning means in a predetermined location in said second position whereby the elastic strip cutting means may be actuated to cut the elastic strip a predetermined distance from said tensioning means so that a leading portion of elastic strip equal to the distance between said tensioning means in the first position thereof and said sewing means protrudes from said tensioning means to allow the elastic strip to be placed in engagement with said sewing means when said tensioning means is again placed in said first position.
4. A cutting attachment adapted for use with a sewing machine applying a line of stitching to a desired number of layers, said attachment comprising:
a. elongate plunger means having scissors-type cutting blades on the forward end thereof in which at least one of said blades is movable with respect to the other of said blades, said plunger means being mounted for linear reciprocating movement for moving said cutting blades into overlapping relationship with the material to be cut when a cutting action is desired and out of overlapping relationship with the material when no cutting action is desired;
b. cam means mounted in cooperative relationship with said cutting blades for camming said cutting blades into cutting engagement with each other upon movement of said cutting blades by said plunger means into overlapping relationship with the material to, be cut;
c. stationary carriage means for slidingly receiving and guiding said plunger means in its linear reciprocating path of movement;
d. means normally biasing said plunger means into a rearward position thereof away from overlapping relationship with the material being cut; and
e. means for moving said plunger means against the bias of said plunger biasing means to move said blades into overlapping relationship with the material to be cut for a cutting action thereby when desired.
5. Acutting attachment, as set forth in claim 4, in which said scissors-type cutting blades comprise a stationary blade attached to the forward end of said plunger means and a movable blade pivotally mounted on the forward end of said plunger means in cutting relationship with said stationary blade, and including means normally biasing said movable blade out of cutting engagement with said stationary blade when said blades are out of overlapping relationship with the material being cut.
6. A cutting attachment, as set forth in claim 4, including stop means for limiting the forward and rearward linear movement of said plunger means and said cutting blades for correctly positioning same into and out of the overlapping relationship with the material to be cut.
7. Sewing apparatus comprising in combination:
a. sewing means for applying a line of stitching through the edge of a desired number of layers of material;
b. tensioning means mounted adjacent said sewing means in advance of the line of stitching being applied thereby for supplying a strip of elastic material to said sewing means and for cooperating with said sewing means to tension the elastic strip in an extended condition thereof so that the elastic strip maybe stitched to the edge of the material in the extended condition thereof, said tensioning means being pivotally mounted for assuming a first position in the line of feed to the sewing means when supplying the strip of elastic material thereto and for assuming a second position out of the line of feed to said sewing means when no strip of elastic material is to be fed to said sewing means and including stop means for positioning said tensioning means in a predetermined location in said second position;
c. cutting means mounted between said sewing means and said tensioning means for cutting the elastic strip after a desired length of same has been supplied to said sewing means and being so positioned with respect to said tensioning means that when said tensioning means is located in said second position thereof a leading portion of elastic strip equal to the distance between said tensioning means in the first position thereof and said sewing means will be left protruding from said tensioning means to allow the elastic strip to be placed in engagement with said sewing means when said tensioning means is again placed in said first position, said cutting means comprising a pair of.
movable scissors-type cutting blade means mounted for linear reciprocating movement into the line of feed of the. elastic strip when a cutting action is desired and out of the line of feed of the elastic strip when no cutting action is desired and means cooperating with said cutting blade means formoving said cutting blade means into cutting engagement with each other and with the elastic strip upon movement thereof into the line of feed of the elastic strip;
d. edge binding strip-guide and folding means mountedbetween said elastic strip cutting means and said sewing means for guiding and folding a strip of edge binding material in a generally inverted C-shaped configuration to said sewing means for overlapping the elastic strip and the edge of the material and for being stitched thereto; and
e. second cutting means disposed adjacent saidv sewing means on the other side thereof from said first elastic strip cutting means, said elastic strip tensioning means and said edge binding strip guide and folding means for cutting the edge binding strip and the line of stitching after the desired edge binding and sewing has been completed. 8. A cutting attachment adapted for use with a sewing machine applying a line of stitching to a desired number of layers of material, said attachment comprising:
a. elongated plunger means having scissors-type cutting blades on the forward end thereof comprising a stationary blade and a movable blade pivotally mounted on the forward end of said plunger means in cutting relationship with said stationary blade and means normally biasing said movable blade out of cutting engagement with said stationary blade, said plunger means being mounted for linear reciprocating movement for moving said cutting blades into overlapping relationship with the material to be cut when a cutting action is desired and out of over; lapping relationship with the material when no cutting ac; tion is desired;
b. a stationary carriage means for slidingly receiving and guiding said plunger means in its linear path of move: ment;
c. means normally biasing said plunger means into a rearward position thereof away from overlapping relationship with the material being cut; (1. means for moving said plunger means against the bias of said plunger biasing means to move said blades into over lapping relationship with the material to be cut for a cutting action whereby when desired;
