[Class 98 (i)] A matrix for use in photographic type-composing, of the kind described in Specification 496,927, comprises a body 1 with a recess 5 holding a character-bearing plaque 6, and covers or shields over the exposed surfaces of the plaque, each having an aperture registering with the part of the plaque necessary for the exposure of the character. The surface of the plaque or film is thus shielded from contact with the fingers. In the form shown, the plaque is held between a bottom wall 10 of the recess and a retaining washer 12, the latter being secured in the recess by bending over a thin rib 12a, and both the wall 10 and the washer are provided with openings 13, 14 following the outlines of, but slightly larger than, the character on the plaque. Notches 9 in the body 1 receive locating lugs on the plaque and washer. For the smaller characters, the openings need not follow the outlines of tho character, but may be, for example, rectangular with rounded corners, or circular. The characters are located in the matrices in relation to two reference lines, one parallel to the long edge of the matrix and the other perpendicular to the first and at a given distance from the apex of a notch 7.
