Abstract
544,670. Puncture-closing compositions. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., KING, F. G. W., and BULGIN, D. Jan. 5, 1939, Nos. 371 and 372. [Class 70] [Also in Group XXXIV] A self-sealing air-tube, particularly for use in tyres for aircraft wheels, comprises an inner inflatable tube 2 spaced from a surrounding sleeve which is adapted to be compressed- or at least devoid of tension-in use, the intervening space being formed as a plurality of cells 3 containing a mobile sealing-medium. The sleeve 1 may be of the same cross-sectional dimensions as the inner surface of the tyre cover, or it may be formed with transverse corrugations 1a, circumferential corrugations, or spaced protuberances ; or, the outer surface of the sleeve may be coated with spongy or unvulcanized rubber. The partition walls 7 of the cells may extend radially or otherwise ; and, the cells may be arranged in two superposed suaggered layers. The sealing medium preferably consists of a liquid such as water, rubber latex, or a gum solution, in which are suspended particles of substances such as bentonite clay, cotton or asbestos fibres, mica, rubber crumb, or latex precipitates. The sealing-medium may also consist of, or comprise, a permanently-adhesive substance-preferably in the form of a polymerized isobutylene known as Vistanex ; and, substances such as ethylene glycol or ethyl alcohol to lower the freezing- point.
