Abstract

544,480. Intaglio printing-machines. GRIFFIN, E. G. (American Bank Note Co.). Aug. 7, 1940, No. 12703. [Class 100 (ii)] Inking apparatus.-The plate 11 of a rotary steel plate printing machine is inked by a resilient roller 16 engaging the plate under such pressure as to be deformed thereby and driven positively and indirectly from the plate cylinder so as to have a surface speed substantially equal to that of the plate. The inking roller 16 comprising a resilient cover 17, e.g. of soft vulcanized rubber, on a metal core is driven by a gear 32 from a gear 31 on a distributing drum 18 which is driven through a train 28 from a gear 12 on the plate cylinder 10. The gear 32 is removable so that, after change of diameter of the roller 16 due to regrinding, it may be replaced by one of a different number of teeth so that the peripheral speed of the roller remains unchanged. The roller 16 is mounted in slidable bearings 33 adjustable by screws 35, 36 and lock nuts 37, 38 to regulate its pressure upon the plate 16, and the drum 18 is also mounted in slidable bearings 40, adjustable by screws 42 and locknuts 43, 44, the latter of which are mounted on the screws 35. Ink is supplied to the drum 18 from a fountain roller 15 by means of a distributing roller 19 mounted in vertical slotted bearings 26 so as to rest. freely on both rollers. The roller 19 comprises a number of sleeves 22, Fig. 5, having resilient coverings 23, the covering of one sleeve overlapping the adjacent sleeve. Such a roller may be made to the length required by the width of the plate 11. The diameters of the coverings 23 may vary in accordance with the amount of ink required on the corresponding strip of the plate. The ends of the spindle of the roller 19 may be engaged by V brackets 27 adjustable vertically to raise the roller clear of the drum 18 and roller 15 for cleaning purposes. The ink film on the roller 15 is regulated by a duct blade 47 having an angular head 48 carrying adjusting screws 49 threaded through a cross bar 50 of the duct, springs 52 being arranged between the head and bar. The edge of the blade 47 is undercut at 54 and ink which drops from the edge of the blade is caught by a supplementary blade 55 which returns it to the roller 15. The edge of the blade 55 is spaced from the roller 15 a slightly greater distance than the blade 47.
