[Class 91] [Also in Groups IV and VIII] Resinous materials are obtained by condensing with formaldehyde a symmetrical nitrile of the general formula NCCXX<SP>1</SP>NHRNHCXX<SP>1</SP>CN. in which X and X' are alkyl radicals or hydrogen and'R is a polymethylene chain which, if of an even number of carbon atoms, may be centrally divided by -NH- or -N(CXX<SP>1</SP>CN)-. The products may be used as corrosion and sludge inhibitors for lubricating oils. Their properties may be modified by varying the molar ratio of formaldehyde and by conducting the re-action in the presence of other materials capable of re-acting with formaldehyde, e.g. phenols, amines, ureas, proteins, guanidine, or carboxylic or sulphonic acid amides. Examples are given of the preparation of resins from the following nitriles-1:6-di (α-cyanoisopropylamino)hexane, 1:10-di (a-cyanoisopropylamino)decane, 1:6-di- (cyanomethylamino) hexane, N-di(6-α-cyanoisopropylaminohexyl)-α-cyanoisopropylamine, 1 : 4- di (a-cyanoisopropylamino)butane, di-(2-α-cyanoisopropylaminoethyl)amine, N-di (2-α-cyanoisopropylaminoethyl)-α-cyanoisopropylamine, 1:2- di (α-cyanoisopropylamino) ethane and 1 : 6-di (α- cyano-α-ethylethylamino)hexane. Further examples of suitable nitriles are given.
