544,379. Cutting fabrics. CLAY & SONS, Ltd., C., CLAY, C. R., and HEASMAN, A. M. Dec. 11, 1940, No. 17543. [Class 31 (i)] A fabric made of yarns of thermo-plastic derivatives of cellulose is slit into strips or ribbons and the edges sealed by means of heated cutter discs 24 coacting with rollers 33 carried on the top of rods 36 supported by weighted levers 41, the cutter discs 24 spaced apart by distance washers 30 being clamped by a nut 27 on a mandrel 19 driven by gearing 43, 44, belt pulley hub 49 and clutch 48 actuated by a treadle operated two-armed lever 50, 55; the counter rollers 33 rotate freely on journal pins 34. The cutter discs 24 are heated by an electrical resistance heater element 75 enclosed in a quartz tube and controlled by a thermo-couple and pyrometer to maintain the mandrel at a temperature of between 550‹ and 650‹F. The feed of the fabric is about 27 to 28 feet per minute and the cutter discs have an edge angle of from 60 degrees to 110 degrees.
