Abstract

544,283. Titanium dioxide pigments. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO., Ltd. Oct. 3, 1940, No. 14850. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1939. [Class 95] A process for improving the pigment properties of calcined titanium dioxide pigments comprises forming an aqueous slurry of the calcined pigment containing a readily hydrolysible salt of antimony or tin, and hydrolysing the salt to form a coating of antimony or tin hydroxide upon the pigment particles. The antimony or tin salt of a volatile acid is preferably employed, and stannous chloride and antimony trichloride are specified in examples. The hydrolysis may be effected by boiling, though this is not always necessary. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the titanium pigments treated are not limited to calcined titanium dioxide pigments, and the metal hydroxides are not limited to those of antimony and tin. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
